Another dimension to protect your Facebook account from hackers is to note that when you login every single day from many devices, be it from your mobile phone, computer, laptop and office workstation, ensure you don’t leave your Facebook account on without logging out.

How To Protect Your Facebook Account From Hackers

Here are a few things Facebook advised you can do to keep your account secure from hackers:

1. Create a Strong Password.

Your Facebook password should be difficult to guess, yet easy for you to remember.  Avoid including your name, birthdate, pets, or common words in your password.

  • The longer the password, the more difficult it will be for others to crack. One way to create a strong password is to think of a long phrase or series of words that you can remember, but that nobody would ever guess.
  • Always include numbers, a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, and symbols in your passwords. Aim for at least 10 characters
2. Use Valid Mobile Number

Use of your mobile number is one of many ways to enhance your account security on Facebook. This way, even when you lose or forget your password, Facebook will be able to send you a new one via SMS

3. Keep Your Password Safe
  • Don’t use your Facebook password anywhere else online, and never share it with other people.
  • Your password should be hard to guess, so don’t include your name or common words.
  • Learn more about creating a strong password.
4. Don’t Share Your Login Information
  • Scammers may create fake websites that look like Facebook and ask you to login with your email and password.
  • Always check the website’s URL before you enter your login information. When in doubt, type www.facebook.com into your browser to get to Facebook.
  • Don’t forward emails from Facebook to other people, since they may have sensitive information about your account.

5. Decline Unknown Friend Requests

Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know;

  • Scammers may create fake accounts to friend people.
  • Becoming friends with scammers might allow them to spam your timeline, tag you in posts and send you malicious messages.
6. Beware of Malicious Software
  • Malicious software can cause damage to a computer, server or computer network.
  • Learn the signs of an infected computer or device and how to remove malicious software.
  • Keep your web browser up to date and remove suspicious applications or browser add-ons.
7. Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links

Don’t click on links you are not sure of even if they appear to come from a friend or a company you know;

  • This includes links on Facebook (example: on posts) or in emails.
  • Keep in mind that Facebook will never ask you for your password in an email.
  • If you see a suspicious link on Facebook, report to Facebook.
7. Set Up Two-Factor Authentication
  • You can also get alerts about unrecognized logins, and set up two-factor authentication.
  • If you’re logged into Facebook on a computer, you can use Security Checkup to review your security settings.
