Six Reasons ASUU is a Pressure Group.

Pressure groups includes self-interest groups such as: trade unions; business and farming associations; churches; ethnic associations; pensioner groups; educational group and returned service personnel.

Pressure groups in Nigeria are not interested in direct governance or in contesting elections. They may however support particular candidates or parties they regard as supportive of their cause.

The Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Union of Teachers, and Market Women Associations are examples of pressure groups in Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is also a pressure group in Nigeria.  The pressure group union of university academic staff was founded in 1978 to focus on the wellbeing of  Nigerian universities and their members.

Here’s the reasons why the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as a Nigerian union of university academic staff is a pressure group.

Six Reasons ASUU is a Pressure Group.

What make ASUU a pressure group in Nigeria and how do ASUU as a  pressure group enhance the political system of Nigeria.

1….. One reason why ASUU is a pressure group is because the organization is a vital link between the government and the Nigerian universities academic staff. They keep governments more responsive to the wishes of the members.

2….. Going by the motivations of the eggheads that ushered the group into existence, the fundamental objective of ASUU is to negotiate with the Federal Government on the basis of the need for the provision of desirable welfare for Nigerian teachers at the tertiary level, especially the universities.

3…. ASUU uses expertise to provide the Nigerian government with important information and also offer an alternative source of advice to the government, separate from that coming from the Public Service.

4….  ASUU uses direct action like strikes and  demonstrations to influence the government action.

5…. The aim of ASUU is to protect the common interest of members and not to take over governance as political parties do.

6…. ASUU is  well organized. Without organization, ASUU cannot function effectively. The pressure group have  branches in all universities in Nigeria  and all are coordinated from the headquarters.
