Prepaid Electricity vs. Postpaid Electricity- Difference
The primary difference between prepaid electrical service and postpaid electrical service is in when the electricity you use is paid for. Knowing how these plans differ is critical when you’re shopping for an electricity plan. Service providers and brokers make comparing electricity rates relatively easy.
However, individual homeowners or business owners always know their usage best. With a little knowledge of your needs and the types of plans out there, it’s possible to choose a plan that is advantageous to you.
1. Prepaid Electricity
Prepaid service is lesser known but widely available. With this type of service, you have a “credit” balance that you’ve already paid for, and this balance is reduced as you use electricity. There are no deadlines or monthly bills. Under this system you can pay what you want, when you want, provided you maintain a balance. The burden is on you to keep up the balance.
2. Postpaid Electricity
Post payment is the most common electrical service payment scheme. You use the electricity first, and are billed for what you’ve used in scheduled intervals (monthly, quarterly, etc.) Once billed, you have a set time, such as fifteen days, to pay the amount due. Failure to pay often incurs late fees or other penalties. Continued failure to pay can result in disconnection and collection action.

IBEDC Appeals For Caution As The Rains Begin, Urges Customers To Report Faults Promptly
The Chief Operating Officer of the Company Engr. John Ayodele said that the rainy seasons often witness the highest levels of incidents within the electricity distribution sector because of heavy rainfall, windstorms, and floods.
Engr. Ayodele, therefore, urged members of the public to be on their guards to avoid falling victims of an accident that could easily occur during the rains.
Speaking on the need to observe all safety regulations especially during the rainy season, Engr. Ayodele said that IBEDC is concerned about the safety of its customers and staff, hence, the need for more sensitization and education now.
“There is a need to create awareness on safety measures during the rainy season because of the hazards that electricity and water can cause. Avoid conditions that can compromise your safety around electricity, such as using wet electrical appliances or handling them with wet hands; stepping in puddles of water that could potentially be charged. You should also guard against exposed electrical wires, and ensure your houses are well earthed.
Engr. Ayodele furthermore, called on customers within IBEDC’s network to stay clear of snapped power cables, sagging lines, and fallen poles. He said if there is any such incident, customers should call the Customer Care 0700-123 9999 or report through the company’s social media handles immediately while maintaining a safe distance from the point of the accident.
He warned against the practice of conducting commercial activities under power cables, noting that the cables could easily snap due to strong winds, while also advising customers not to engage quack electricians to wire their house or carry out repairs as this may lead to fires, loss of property and even loss of life in some cases.
