Common Uses of Cocoa

Long regarded as a food treat, cocoa is now used by some people as medicine.

Cocoa seed is used for infectious intestinal diseases and diarrhea, asthma, bronchitis, and as an expectorant for lung congestion.

The seed coat is used for liver, bladder, and kidney ailments; diabetes; as a tonic; and as a general remedy. Below are the common uses of cocoa:

1. Chocolate

From the processed cocoa bean comes the fluid paste, or liquor, from which cocoa powder and chocolate are made.

Chocolate is sold directly to the consumer as solid bars of eating chocolate, as packaged cocoa, and as baking chocolate. It is also used by confectioners as coating for candy bars and boxed or bulk chocolates, by bakery product manufacturers and bakers as coating for many types of cookies and cakes, and by ice-cream companies as coating for frozen novelties.

Cocoa powders, chocolate liquor, and blends of the two are used in bulk to flavour various food products and to provide the flavours in such “chocolate” products as syrups, toppings, chocolate milk, prepared cake mixes, and pharmaceuticals.

2.  Animal Feed 

No part of Cocoa is a waste, not even the husk. This part of cocoa can be easily used as an animal feed. You can easily slice a fresh cocoa husk into small flakes. After this process, all you need do is dry the flakes slightly and then mince and dry the pellets.

3. Soft Drinks and Alcohols

This is one of the common uses of cocoa in the local sector today. You can easily collect fresh cocoa pulp juice (or sweating), sterilize them and bottle them to make them neat and presentable.

For the production of some top-rated alcoholic drinks like Brandy, you can collect fresh juice from cocoa, boil slightly, cool and then ferment with yeast. After four days, distill the produce and you have gotten yourself a lovely brandy.

4. Used for Cocoa butter 

This is one of the most significant, and in major parts of the country, the most rated and popular use of cocoa.

Cocoa butter is used in the production of chocolate. Apart from this, it is also used to manufacture some cosmetic products like moistening creams and soaps.

Because of the special effect cocoa has on the skin, many skin therapists advise the use of cocoa-made creams for skin glow and general care.
